Collingwood The Man To Catch In England MVP

We've seen the success of the county MVP so now we've applied the PCA's magic formula to England matches over the last 12 months to discover the national team's key performers.

The overall England MVP for the calendar year is Paul Collingwood. England's one-day captain has been ever present for his country playing 47 matches across all forms of cricket. He has scored 1872 runs, taken 33 wickets and held 39 catches and is ranked first for both T20 and ODI. In Tests he is England's fourth ranked player having scored 965 runs including two centuries.

Kevin Pietersen is in second spot. The flamboyant strokemaker is the only other player to have taken part in all of England's matches in the calendar year and has been consistent if not always at his brilliant best. Pietersen is ranked England's second MVP in Tests and third in each of the shorter forms. He had a fine summer in 2007 scoring a brace of centuries against both the West Indies and India in Test matches and finished off with a decisive innings of 129 in the third Test against New Zealand, which represented over half England's first innings total.

Ryan Sidebottom pipped Pietersen to top spot in Tests but having played 20 games fewer in the shorter forms he was unable to make any impression on the top two overall. Sidebottom's astonishing renaissance saw him contribute 53 Test match wickets including four five-wicket hauls but he was not selected for the World Cup or the inaugural World Twenty20. His impressive showing subsequently has seen him climb the T20 and ODI rankings and in terms of average points per games played he is leading the way overall with 15.66.

Ian Bell slides into fourth spot. Bell, who seems to grow in stature and maturity with every passing series, played just two T20 matches but figured prominently in Tests and ODIs where he was ranked sixth and fourth respectively. He started and finished the Tests with hundreds against the West Indies and New Zealand and there were seven fifties in between. A solitary one-day hundred might have been seen by some as underachieving but in 21ODIs he was a model of consistency with four fifties, failing to reach double figures just three times.
