Anderson Maintains England MVP Lead After ODI's
England's success in the Test series and disappointment in the one-day internationals is reflected in the fact that Jimmy Anderson, England's Test MVP, leads the overall MVP by a comfortable margin. The swing bowler took 19 Test wickets including a Test best 7-43 in the first innings at Trent Bridge but could muster just five one-day wickets at an economy rate of 5.05. He is England's leading wicket taker of the summer with 26 scalps across all cricket.
Anderson's nearest challenger in the overall MVP is Stuart Broad. The tall, baby-faced bowling all-rounder leads the ODI MVP after some miserly bowling performances including 2-16 from eight overs at the Riverside and 2-14 from ten at Bristol. His economy rate for the series was an impressive 3.59 runs per over. Broad is ranked fifth in the Test MVP, his best performance coming at his adopted home Trent Bridge with 64 and 2-10. He has 147 runs and 16 wickets against New Zealand this summer.
After England's one-day defeat at Lord's stand-in captain Kevin Pietersen recognised that England's batters need to improve. Such are his high standards that some of that criticism no doubt applies to himself for having scored hundreds in the last Test at Trent Bridge and the first one-day international at the Riverside as well as guiding England to a comfortable win in the Twenty20 with 42 not out, there was precious little else from England's best batsman. He is ranked sixth in the ODI MVP with 133 runs including that 110 at Durham, which will always be remembered for the switch-hits off Scott Styris. Pietersen is ranked third overall having contributed 361 runs from all cricket.
Ryan Sidebottom occupies fourth place despite a poor ODI series where he mustered just two wickets with an economy rate of 5.36. He enjoyed another fine Test series, of course, racking up 17 wickets including 6-67 to wrap things up at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire's left-arm swing bowler is ranked second in the Test MVP, tenth in the ODI MVP and fourth overall.
For all Paul Collingwood's troubles over the summer there has never been any doubts about his ability in the one-day arena. Despite missing the last ODI at Lord's, England's one-day captain scored 149 runs in the series and took seven wickets. His best performance came on home turf at the Riverside where he scored 64 and took 4-15. He is ranked second in the ODI MVP, which contrasts sharply with his ranking of tenth in the Test MVP. He managed just 32 runs in three Test matches, which was 3.93% of England's runs for the series. He is fifth overall with 181 runs and eight wickets.
Ian Bell is in sixth place overall. He tops the Twenty20 MVP after his 60 not out helped crush the Black Caps but a poor Test series (ranked 11th) was compounded by a failure to convert starts yet again in the ODIs. He scored 139 runs from the opening berth but failed to reach fifty and Pietersen's comments about hundreds winning matches might have been partly aimed at the Warwickshire man.
Andrew Strauss, ranked third in the Test after scoring 266 runs is in seventh overall, while Graeme Swann and Owais Shah were two players to emerge with credit from the one-day internationals. Swann ranked third in the ODI MVP, took seven wickets and had an impressive economy rate of just 4.18 runs per over, while Shah, ranked fourth, was the leading run-scorer with 199 runs at a strike rate of 1.05.
