Captain Kev Climbs England MVP Table - 12/08/2008

This week has been all about captain Kev Pietersen as he ushered in a new era in style at the Oval. Leading from the front, Pietersen scored a first innings hundred in trademark flamboyant style taking his run tally in the Test series versus South Africa to 421. Pietersen has scored 607 Test runs for the summer including three hundreds in five Tests, which has elevated him to second in the Test MVP and second overall.

Jimmy Anderson will take some catching in both these MVP categories. The best swinger in town was in the wickets again at the Oval taking 3-42 and 2-85 extending his lead to 48 points in the Test MVP and 35 points in the overall MVP. Anderson has taken 34 wickets in the seven Tests against New Zealand and South Africa.

Stuart Broad returned as part of the five man attack under Pietersen to consolidate his fourth position in the Test MVP and fourth in the Overall MVP. The bowling all-rounder could not repeat the batting heroics of his previous three Tests but he did get back amongst the wickets with 2-60 and 3-44. He has 280 runs, including three fifties and 15 wickets from Tests and will be eagerly awaiting the one-day series where he is ranked first in the ODI MVP.

Ryan Sidebottom is third in the Test MVP despite missing both Headingley and the Oval against South Africa. The left-armer has taken 24 Test wickets this summer from five Tests and averages over 21 points per game. Sidebottom is fourth overall.

Monty Panesar is in fifth spot in the Test MVP and seemed to enjoy life under Pietersen. He was judiciously used by his new captain in the first innings but still picked up 2-4 and he doubled his match tally with 2-37 in the second innings. Panesar has taken 22 Test wickets this summer and is ranked seventh overall.

The batting trio of Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell who formed the top of England's order under Pietersen are ranked sixth, seventh and eighth respectively in the Test MVP. Bell played by far the biggest innings of the summer with his 199 at Lord's, Cook has been the most consistent with five fifties but a top score of just 76, while Strauss pipped his opening partner by three runs with a Test total of 446.

A special note should be made of England's two returning big men. Andrew Flintoff is already up to ninth in the test MVP despite only playing two Tests and is averaging just under 22 points per game. Steve Harmison has played just the one Test, of course, but his combined performance of four top order wickets and 49 runs at the Oval earned him over 31 points.
