Flintoff Racks Up MVP Points - 21/11/2008

Andrew Flintoff's all-round abilities have never been in question and now England's talisman has put a run of games together he's racking up MVP points. He took 3-31 from nine overs in the third ODI from Kanpur in addition to scoring 26 with the bat, which sees him close to within 22 points of Stuart Broad at the top of the ODI MVP. Flintoff, in second spot has played five games fewer than the rest of the top five: Broad, Kevin Pietersen (in third), Owais Shah (fourth) and Ian Bell (fifth). Flintoff averages a very healthy 12.98 points per ODI. He has played 12 matches for England in all cricket since his comeback in the summer and has scored 373 runs and taken 26 wickets, which sees him in fourth spot in the overall MVP.

Broad leads both the ODI and the overall MVP displaying consistency and maturity way beyond his years. He has scored 356 runs and taken 39 wickets from 21 games in all forms.

Kevin Pietersen is getting closer to toppling the might of India on their own patch with the Kanpur match the closest of the series so far. England's captain knows he needs to convert some useful starts into big scores to help get his team over the line. His last one-day hundred came on June 15th at the Riverside against New Zealand, when he unveiled his switch hit. He has scored 377 ODI runs in total and 1026 across all cricket which sees him 14 points behind Broad in the overall MVP.

Jimmy Anderson has bowled without luck in the three ODIs so far. The Lancashire swing bowler, who leads the Test MVP, has yet to take a wicket in the ODIs in India and is finding it tough to make up ground on Broad and Pietersen in the overall MVP. He has 42 wickets across all forms but only six in ODIs.

Ian Bell occupies fifth spot in both the overall and ODI MVPs. Bell contributed 46 off 47 balls in Kanpur in a lively opening partnership with Ravi Bopara. The Warwickshire man has reached double figures 10 times from his 12 completed innings in this year's ODI campaign yet has passed fifty just once. He has 366 ODI runs just behind Owais Shah's 375 and Pietersen's 377.

Bopara notched a useful 8.5 points with his innings of 60 in Kanpur, which was exactly a quarter of England's total. Unfortunately for Bopara he needed 30%  of the team's total for his MVP bonus points to kick in. The Essex player knows all about the MVP points scoring system having had a tilt at the county MVP this summer. Expect him to start shooting up the ODI MVP now he's getting a go at the top of the order.
