The Past Players Career Mentoring Programme

It can sometimes be a tough transition to make from professional cricket into the commercial world. There are different challenges to be faced, new skills to be learned and the need for a fresh perspective on life. Even if your move out of the sporting arena has been a successful one, there can be periods when you feel ‘stuck' in your career or possibly even feelings of not being quite on the right path.

The Past Players' Career Mentoring Programme has been specifically created to help and guide you through these times and to provide you with expertise for continued success in your career post cricket.

The programme helps you to answer the following questions:

  • How can I use my skills more effectively in my career?
  • How do I approach a career change?
  • Am I on track with my career?
  • How can I create a CV that really sells my experience and personality?
  • What do employers look for when interviewing?
  • How can I communicate my strengths more effectively at interview?

The benefits to you are:

  • A sounding board for both your career ambitions and concerns
  • A plan for moving forward
  • Clarity on your strengths and how they can be used for your advantage
  • Tools and techniques to market yourself better at interview
  • A CV that acts as a selling tool
  • A greater sense of confidence and purpose

At the core of the programme are a number of tailored exercises.  These have been designed to increase your understanding of your true strengths so that you gain clarity on what it is that you want. These exercises are supported by a combination of 1-2-1 sessions, telephone support and training delivered from Charlie Mulraine. Charlie is a former professional cricketer and rugby player and now runs a business enabling players to enjoy success in their careers post sport. Mulraine Sport has been working closely with the PCA for a number of years on the delivery of PLAN (the PCA's player outplacement programme).

Former player, Graham Cowdrey, recently took advantage of the Past Players' Career Mentoring Programme...

"Charlie Mulraine has a great gift of working through all areas of one's life and in creating a positive and optimistic mindset. His sessions enabled me to move my career forward with confidence and a new sense of purpose.

"I write to tell you this on two accounts. Firstly to thank the PCA for their obvious concern for former players by advertising Charlie's business and secondly I only wish that I had met Charlie during my career - I might have made a few more runs!

"I trust that the PCA will continue to flag up his services - he will help many more cricketers to find their potential I am sure."

Pat Pocock has also recently benefited from the mentoring programme.

"Very many thanks for all the professional and friendly advice that you have given me. Somebody with your experience very often identifies areas and potential that an individual does not  see when ‘standing to close to it.'

"I will endeavour to make the changes to my CV that you recommend and, once again, thank you for your guidance."

For more information on how you can access this service, or to discuss whether this programme is right for you, please contact Charlie Mulraine in the strictest confidence below.

Ian Payne - Career Transition Consultant

Ian Payne joined Surrey CCC straight from school in 1976. A professional cricketer for 11 seasons, Ian left Surrey for Gloucestershire CCC for the last two years of his career, retiring at the end of the 1986 season.

It is a daunting prospect at any time to join the job market, more so after a lengthy career in professional sport. Independently educated but with undistinguished results and minimal experience, Ian realised his biggest asset lay in the broad network of contacts he had built throughout his career. Through them Ian gained access to employment opportunities.

Since 1986, Ian has enjoyed more than 20 years at senior manager and director level across both public and private sector organisations. He is now a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development and Director of a corporate communications consultancy.

Today, one of Ian's major roles is as a Career Transition Consultant, providing valuable insight into how recruiters select new staff in the highly competitive job market. Ian also advises candidates how to seek and prepare for the job application and interview process.

"The job market is teeming with highly experienced and qualified professionals who are victims of the economic climate. Those numbers are increasing rapidly whilst employment opportunities are reducing," says Ian. "It is vital people know how to access the ‘hidden' job market and be aware of recruitment trends and processes. I provide that information through one-to-one consultancy.

"With many years experience as a recruiter myself, I am well aware of the techniques used in filtering out hundreds of strong candidate CV's to shortlist for a job interview. Many highly qualified people miss out on selection simply because they're unaware of what the recruiter wants to see and hear."

From making the most of contacts people already have, to knowing how to deliver a quality performance in a competence-based interview, Ian has a wealth of information, tools and techniques that are as applicable to a professional cricketer's future career plans as to a Sales Director's.

Ian adds: "Sports professionals have skills and attributes much sought after in the workplace. I can work with current and past professionals in sport, particularly cricketers, to help them prepare for life beyond the changing room."
