cinch PCA Awards shortlists revealed

The 2023 cinch PCA Awards shortlists have been confirmed, with the players recognising 14 individuals as standout performers across the past 12 months.

All players have been voted for by their peers, with four headline awards to be announced at the Troxy on Monday 2 October, following the conclusion of the English summer.

The combination of the best performers across international and domestic cricket have already had eight major cinch PCA Awards wins etched into history, including multiple winners Nat Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone and Harry Brook.

With current professionals voting in September, England’s Brook is joined by the current leader of the Domestic Men’s MVP Liam Dawson, Middlesex all-rounder Ryan Higgins and LV= Insurance County Championship leading run-scorer Alex Lees on the cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year shortlist.

The cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year shortlist will see the Domestic Women’s MVP Georgia Adams take on England duo Tammy Beaumont and Sciver-Brunt with South East Stars captain Bryony Smith completing the talented quartet.

The most prestigious awards ceremony in English cricket also recognises the most talented emerging players in England and Wales, with those under the age of 24 on 1 April eligible.

Gloucestershire’s Ollie Price is joined by Somerset’s James Rew and Surrey and England’s Jamie Smith as contenders to win the cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year and follow in the footsteps of Brook who was successful two years in a row.

The cinch PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year will certainly go to a young England star. The number one spinner in the world, Ecclestone, faces competition from her Thunder teammate Mahika Gaur and Northern Diamonds Bess Heath.

Shortlisted players received the news of their honour via team huddles at recent fixtures and were handed a golden ticket as a VIP invite to the event.

The shortlisted candidates will find out at the ceremony whether they have won the award in their category, amongst nine accolades presented on the evening.

Harry Brook

The cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022 is nominated for the Men’s award for the second year in succession.

The 24-year-old’s standout period came during the 2022/23 winter, scoring 797 Test runs at an average of 88.6, including four hundreds.

Brook’s white-ball form has also stood out across the last 12 months, helping England win the T20 World Cup, alongside maiden centuries in the IPL and The Hundred as he now prepares for the 50-over World Cup.

Liam Dawson

The Hampshire all-rounder currently leads the PCA Men’s Domestic Overall MVP Rankings and has had a fantastic season in the LV= Insurance County Championship, scoring 793 runs, including three hundreds, whilst taking 40 wickets.

In the Metro Bank One Day Cup, Dawson produced incredible match-winning figures of 7-15 to propel Hampshire into the final.

The left-arm spinner also took eight wickets for London Spirit in The Hundred alongside 14 wickets for Hampshire in the Vitality Blast.

Ryan Higgins

The Middlesex all-rounder has led the PCA Men’s Domestic Overall MVP Rankings for the majority of the summer, highlighting his importance to his county.

Producing match-winning contributions across all three formats, Higgins has scored an incredible 1,465 runs, alongside taking 53 wickets and 16 catches in the field.

The 28-year-old scored four half-centuries in the first month of the season and won two Match MVP awards on his way to claiming the PCA Men’s Player of the Month for April.

Alex Lees

Durham’s opening batter is the leading run-scorer in the LV= Insurance County Championship across both divisions with 1,341 runs at a phenomenal average of 74.5 and impressive strike-rate of 73.9, including five hundreds.

The left-hander also impressed in the Metro Bank One Day Cup scoring 403 runs from just seven innings with an average of 57.6.

The 30-year-old will be hoping to pick up his second accolade at the PCA Awards, having won PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year in 2014.

Georgia Adams

Another fantastic domestic season from the Southern Vipers skipper saw Adams remarkably win the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy MVPs on her way to lifting the trophies for her side.

The PCA Women’s Player of the Month for August was also part of the successful Southern Brave outfit, ending as the leading wicket taker in The Hundred with 16.

The 29-year-old scored a brilliant 931 runs and took 46 wickets, claiming the PCA Women’s Overall Domestic MVP for the second year in succession.

Tammy Beaumont

The 2016 PCA Women’s Player of the Year enjoyed a brilliant summer highlighted by her double century against Australia in the Metro Bank Women’s Ashes.

The England opening batter also finished as the second leading run scorer in The Hundred with 290 runs and became the first woman to score a century in the competition.

The 32-year-old produced a fabulous innings of 118 off 62 balls, captaining Welsh Fire, and finished with a fantastic tournament strike-rate of 153.4 including 42 fours and five sixes.

Nat Sciver-Brunt

The England all-rounder enjoyed a brilliant winter, scoring 332 runs in the inaugural WPL at an average of 66.4, alongside averaging 55.9 for England from 12 innings in white-ball cricket.

The 31-year-old scored back-to-back Ashes hundreds against Australia in the Women’s Ashes, averaging 131 in ODI cricket and claimed the Metro Bank ODI Women’s Player of the Summer award.

A winner in 2017 and 2022, Sciver-Brunt could become the first woman to win the cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year award three times.

Bryony Smith

The South East Stars all-rounder contributed to her side’s success with both bat and ball, scoring 773 runs and taking 20 wickets across domestic cricket this summer.

The 25-year-old won the PCA Women’s Player of the Month award for June claiming the Match MVP award against Thunder and Central Sparks.

Smith finished second in the Charlotte Edwards Cup MVP Rankings as well as second in the run scoring for the competition with 256 runs with a rapid strike-rate of 155.

Ollie Price

The Gloucestershire all-rounder has impressed in 2023, scoring a brilliant 1,449 runs across all formats including five hundreds, alongside taking 20 wickets.

The 22-year-old finished as the third leading run-scorer in the Metro Bank One Day Cup having amassed 575 runs, including two hundreds.

Price won the PCA Men’s Player of the Month in August having secured three Match MVP awards and a List A career best of 116 not out.

James Rew

A breakthrough season from the Somerset keeper-batter has seen him surpass 1,000 First-Class runs, making him just the seventh teenager to do so since 1890.

Rew accumulated an incredible five LV= Insurance County Championship hundreds this season, averaging a century every four innings.

The 19-year-old has also taken 44 catches and two stumpings while he produced a new career best of 221 against Hampshire at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Jamie Smith

The Surrey keeper-batter has excelled in the past 12 months, commencing with the fastest England Lions hundred ever scored – 126 off 86 balls against Sri Lanka A.

The 23-year-old has scored two First-Class hundreds this season, averaging 42.9 and scored 191 runs in The Hundred with two fifties and strike-rate of 161 for Birmingham Phoenix.

His fantastic performances this summer earned him an International debut against Ireland.

Sophie Ecclestone

A former winner of the PCA Women’s Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019, Ecclestone has been a standout in world cricket.

Ending the inaugural WPL as the joint-leading wicket-taker with 16 dismissals at an average of 14.7, Ecclestone is ranked the number one bowler in the world in ODI and IT20 cricket by the ICC.

In a brilliant international summer, the now 24-year-old took 20 wickets for England to help draw the Ashes.

Mahika Gaur

Bursting onto the scene in the last few months, Gaur has caught the eye of the England selectors having started the year representing the UAE before changing allegiance to her country of birth.

The 6’2” 17-year-old bowls with serious speed and offers a point of difference as a left-arm pace bowler.

Gaur took 20 wickets this season with best figures of 3-26 in ODI cricket against Sri Lanka.

Bess Heath

The Northern Diamonds keeper-batter started the winter off playing in the WBBL for Brisbane Heat, scoring 128 runs at 21.3.

The 22-year-old’s destructive lower order batting and high strike-rate earned her an International debut, scoring 21 off 14 balls in the third ODI against Sri Lanka.

In the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, Heath scored 286 runs at a storming average of 40.9 with a strike-rate of 133.
