Knight Wins Frizzell Award For June – 09/07/2004 This season’s Frizzell PCA Performance of the Month awards have marked yet another cricketing milestone following the announcement of Nick Knight as the winner of the award for June. Outstanding Innings Knight’s outstanding innings of 303 not out for Warwickshire against Middlesex at Lord’s earned him the accolade, joining Surrey’s Martin Bicknell and Kent’s Matthew Walker as 2004 winners. Bicknell’s win in May marked his achievement in passing the 1,000 first class wickets mark – and Knight’s award is equally as significant as his remarkable innings saw him become just the fifth man in history to score a triple century at Lord’s. The History Yorkshire P. Holmes was the first man to do it in 1925, scoring 315 not out, followed by J. Hobbs’ 316 not out for Surrey a year later. Graham Gooch’s famous knock of 333 for England against India in 1990 was at Lord’s, and Warwickshire’s MA Wagh hit 315 there three years ago. Cheque! Knight will receive a cheque for £ 750 from Frizzell after his performance was chosen as the outstanding one in June by the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s (PCA) county representatives. Each month, a number of performances are nominated by a panel including those representatives, England Chairman of Selectors David Graveney, and the PCA Executive. Unlucky Streak The former England man narrowly edged out team-mate Heath Streak in the voting – Streak having marked his debut for the county by taking seven wickets for 80 runs, the best figures by a Warwickshire bowler on their first Frizzell County Championship appearance. He then followed that up with six wickets for 78 runs in the second innings of the match against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston. Just Missing Out… Robert Key of Kent, who scored his fifth first-class century in seven innings with a score of 180, and became the first batsman to score 1,000 first-class runs this season was also high in the voting, as was Gloucestershire’s Craig Spearman who outscored Nick Knight with his 341 runs off 390 balls against Middlesex.
