Patel goes top of PCA MVP Rankings Nottinghamshire all-rounder Samit Patel has gone top of the overall Professional Cricketers’ Most Valuable Player Rankings having become the first player to reach the 400 points landmark this season. Patel earned 22 batting points for his 48-ball 77 in Friday’s NatWest T20 Blast victory over Warwickshire at Trent Bridge and followed up with eight match points in Sunday’s victory over Worcestershire at New Road. Patel now has 429 points across all formats this season and has opened up a 36 points lead over Glamorgan’s former South Africa all-rounder Colin Ingram at the top of the overall PCA MVP which carries a £ 10,000 prize for the winner. Surrey and former Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara, the long-time leader, has dropped to third in the overall rankings with Durham’s former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood fourth on 375 points. Patel has also extended his lead in the all-time PCA MVP for most career points since the rankings were introduced in 2007. He now has 5,182 points in all competitions with Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens second in the all-time list on 4,695 points. The PCA MVP Rankings system identifies the match-winners and key influencers of matches throughout the domestic season. The formula takes into account conditions, quality of opposition, captaincy and strike-rates as well as runs scored and wickets taken. Surrey’s Australia batsman Aaron Finch recorded the 12th best single innings performance in T20 cricket in PCA MVP history for his 40 points haul for his 114 from 64 balls in Sunday’s NatWest T20 Blast victory over Sussex at the Kia Oval. Finch scored his runs at a rate of 1.78 and contributed 59 per cent of Surrey’s total and was the third-best single innings T20 performance by a Surrey player in the PCA MVP Rankings. Jason Roy posted the two best performances against Somerset in 2015 and Kent last year. This season’s NatWest T20 Blast PCA MVP Rankings are now headed by Yorkshire’s England all-rounder David Willey. With Derbyshire involved in a tour match against the West Indies, Willey took the chance to dislodge Wayne Madsen, the PCA Player of the Month for July, at the top of the rankings by taking three points from Friday’s Roses Match victory over Lancashire and eight more from Saturday’s defeat by Leicestershire. Willey now has a three points lead over Madsen with Ingram in third place on 149 points and Collingwood fourth with 145 points. To see the full PCA MVP table click here. {{ak_sharing}}
