Professional Cricketers’ Association President Graham Gooch, Chairman Daryl Mitchell and Chief Executive David Leatherdale have paid tribute to England after they created history by winning their first ever men’s World Cup trophy.
The most dramatic final in the competition’s history saw them defeat New Zealand on boundaries hit.
Both teams scored 241 in the 50 overs, which led to a super over until that was also tied in the most dramatic fashion with 15 runs each, meaning the final was decided on boundaries hit. England hit 26 compared to New Zealand’s 17 meaning Eoin Morgan lifted the trophy in front of a jubilant home crowd.
Man of the Match Ben Stokes top scored with an unbeaten 84, culminating with hitting 14 off the last four balls to produce the first ever tie in a World Cup final. With Stokes and Jos Buttler hitting 15 runs between them in the super over, Jofra Archer defended 16 runs thanks to Jason Roy combining with Buttler to run out Martin Guptill on the last ball at Lord’s to end the 44 year wait to be named Cricket World Cup Champions.
“As a country we can rejoice in the success of this team and build on this for future years to promote the great game within these islands.”
GRAHAM GOOCH
PCA President Graham Gooch played in all three previous World Cup finals in 1979, 1987 and 1992 and reacted to England’s maiden 50-over success.
“You couldn’t write that script,” said Gooch.
“We have waited a long time for this moment after three losing finals. This has been a huge effort for all concerned from the team management, Eoin Morgan and all of the players. They showed so much character, commitment and desire in one of the greatest games of cricket we have ever seen.
“New Zealand were outstanding and they did not deserve to lose that so commiserations to them as there was nothing between the sides.
“Everyone played their part, and this success means everything. We won the football World Cup a long time ago, the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and we have waited far too long to add cricket to that list. The women have already had success in this format so for the men to join them is special.
“As a country we can rejoice in the success of this team and build on this for future years to promote the great game within these islands.”
“He has helped create a team, which has inspired the nation.”
DARYL MITCHELL
PCA Chairman, Daryl Mitchell, joined the congratulations to the England team.
“What this England team have achieved over the past four years is nothing short of sensational,” said Mitchell.

“Eoin Morgan’s leadership has been exceptional throughout this journey and he deserves all of the plaudits that go his way. He has helped create a team, which has inspired the nation.
“This ODI team are the first ever team to reach the pinnacle in winning the World Cup and we are very proud of them. I am hopeful this will kick-start an exciting chapter in English cricket.”
"(It) has given English cricket a fantastic platform to create a lasting legacy."
